Course Information
This programme explores, at postgraduate level, the theory and practice of sustainable urban and building design and its potential impact on the health of users. It enables you to build on your existing knowledge and skills by raising your awareness of the environmental impact of design decisions. It also looks at how to undertake holistic sustainable design analysis integrated within the building information modelling environment.
The approach to sustainability extends beyond the environment, including social, economic, and managerial factors. The programme also encourages students to think broadly and actively participate in research conducted by experienced staff, gaining valuable knowledge.
What you will study
You will critically analyze current sustainable architecture and low energy design principles and technologies, government legislation, codes for sustainable design and other important professional, industrial and commerce drivers. You will also research issues that could adversely affect the health of building users, coming up with findings and solutions which are people-centred, proactive, and preventive.
Sustainability is not just about the environment so you will also consider it in a broader contextual framework, including socio-cultural, economic and governance factors as well as advances in scientific and technological research.
It includes live projects, field trips, site work, physical model experimentation, guest lectures and specialist workshops so that your learning experience is as close to real-world practices as academically possible.
A variety of assessment methods are used, including a combination of coursework and live project work, assignments, exhibitions, degree show, peer group reviews, graphic and oral presentations, and portfolios.

Courses
Research Methods: Application & Evaluation
This module advises, guides, and develops necessary skills for identifying and applying appropriate research methods, and devising an overall comprehensive research plan. The learning process includes identifying, evaluating, and applying different research philosophies, approaches, and strategies, as well as methods of data collection and data analysis.
Health in Buildings: Comparative Approaches
This module enhances knowledge regarding the importance of health and safety in the design of a new building and how corrective measures can be applied to existing constructions.
Sustainable Architecture & Low Energy Design
During this module, the design principles, methodologies, and techniques involved in the design of energy-efficient architecture are critically evaluated, whether it concerns new construction or the renovation of buildings. Additionally, significant issues relating to climate change and energy use in the built environment are examined.
Environmental Risk & Responsibility
This module evaluates how actions, decisions and leadership at a professional level interact with the society in which a professional works and they influence the environmental risk and the planet’s sustainable future. Starting with a holistic approach of how the environmental pressures are created by the development of technologies, the unit follows a systemic approach regarding how the responsibility for sustainability does not always fall solely on decision-makers.
CPD & Strategic Management
During this module, managerial skills related to working in a global industrial environment are developed. Strategic concepts are studied, and learning takes place regarding how these concepts are transferred to different industries or specializations. Students focus on managing the future on a global scale, analyzing, and predicting based on data and financial analyses, while also considering business ethics.
Sustainable Design Simulation & Analysis
This module provides theoretical and practical study of sustainable building analysis in relation to a design proposal, linked with its climate and location. Students examine significant issues related to climate change and energy use in the built environment.
Sustainable Construction Methods & Materials (elective)
One of the most important remits of sustainable construction is to reduce energy consumption based on fossil fuels. This unit evaluates the principles, methods and techniques involved in selecting and determining methods and materials for sustainable construction.
Designing Environments (elective)
This module is the best option for students with a background in architectural technology. Students analyze issues related to sustainability and associated with key players and systems in regeneration as well as new research and developments in the design of the built environment.
Independent Scholarship
In this module, students will have the opportunity to use and enhance their knowledge and intellectual skills they have gained during their studies through extensive research related to the course material. This can take the form of a dissertation, a research-based technical design and development project, or the exhibition of creative design artwork.
