Student Affairs Office and Students’ Union develop every year a wide network of voluntary actions including:
- Organization and participation in actions and projects of charitable, social and ecological character:
In NGOs and other charitable organizations cooperating with the Mediterranean College
In support groups of big events organized by the Mediterranean College, such as the Graduation Awards Ceremony, the Student Conference and the MC Employability Fair
Below are some of the recent voluntary actions and projects where the College students have successfully participated in.
Organization of a Christmas and Easter Bazaar
The School of Education organizes every year in the premises of the College charitable Bazaars to support associations and unions. The School students under the guidance of their tutor make innovative creations and crafts available for sale to students, parents and the staff of the Mediterranean College. The earnings of recent Bazaars have been offered to the following organizations: The ‘Smile of the child’, WIN Hellas, the Christian shelter for girls “Agia Anna”, guesthouse “Frontida”, the Greek Children’s Village in Filiro, Melissa orphanage.
Special Olympics
XINI Educational Group signed the Memorandum of Understanding for the Special Olympics – Athens 2011 Volunteers Programme and mobilized more than 600 of its students to participate as volunteers in the organization of the games. With this initiative, the College contributed to the organization of the biggest athletic event, the cultivation of the idea of volunteerism among the students, respect for diversity, self-esteem and support to the skills of people with mental disabilities. The President of Mediterranean College, Sophocles Xinis, was awarded an honorary plaque for his valuable and essential contribution to the Special Olympics volunteers programme and the cultivation of the idea of Volunteerism.
Restructuring the Grava Park
More than 400 volunteers –students of the Mediterranean College and IEK XINI, as well as residents of the area and employees of the municipality of Athens– participated in the big voluntary project to restructure the Grava park next to the historic school complex, an action that was successfully organized and implemented by XINI Group and the 5th municipal community of the municipality of Athens. Within 2 days after the beginning of the project the volunteers used more than 900 liters of colour and 100 paint brushes/ rollers to paint the walls around the school complex, 150 garbage bags to clean the park and 80 trees in the framework of tree-planting in Grava park and the surrounding area. This voluntary action to upgrade Grava park and the area in general was massively attended not only by volunteers but also by major representatives of the municipality, including the Mayor of Athens, Mr. Giorgos Kaminis.
Disabled for 10 minutes
On the occasion of the “International Day of Persons with Disability” Mediterranean College organizes every year an alternative action entitled “Disabled for 10 minutes”. The citizens are invited to experience for just a few minutes the difficulties faced by our fellow disabled citizens, when all the rest of us show no respect for their right to move around unhindered and use all this infrastructure that has been actually designed to facilitate their life. College students invite passersby to move between cables while sitting on a wheelchair, walk some meters among people without seeing and join in lots of other activities, such as goalball (football for the blind) etc.
Eco-Logical Christmas
Mediterranean College, following a totally green course over the last years, thus proving in practice its environmental awareness, supports the decision of its students to make Christmas “green” and eco-logical for the sake of the planet and pass the message of ecological awareness through the global celebration of Christmas. With the slogan “YES to ECOLOGICAL CHRISTMAS”, the College students invite all of us to “Make Santa Claus green again”.
If you are interested in taking part in voluntary projects or offer voluntary work inside or outside the College, you may contact the Student Affairs Office. Mediterranean College and most of the organizations issue a certificate of voluntary work that you can use in your CV.
