Course Information
The BA (Hons) Fashion Design & Marketing programme offers an integrated combination of creative design skills and strategic marketing knowledge tailored to the dynamic fashion industry. It is an interdisciplinary undergraduate programme that synthesizes technical expertise and communication studies in creation, innovation, and the inspiration of new talents in fashion. Through courses and projects, students are prepared by learning design within the context of the entire creative process, enabling them to thrive in the competitive global fashion market.
The programme is offered in collaboration with the University of Derby, a university with a strong tradition in Fashion & Textiles and a leading position in the rankings for Marketing studies (TOP5 in the UK for Marketing & PR studies, Guardian 2024).
What you will learn
With the aim of fostering creativity, cultivating aesthetic sensitivity, and sharpening commercial acumen, the primary distinction of the BA (Hons) Fashion Design & Marketing programme at the University of Derby lies in the level of individual experimentation and the implementation of ideas and techniques, as a basis for creating communication strategies that connect the creator with the audience. Key programme areas include:
Fundamental design principles: The programme begins with a strong emphasis on the principles of design, nurturing students’ creativity through courses in fashion illustration, pattern making, garment construction, textiles, and textile manufacturing. Practical workshops in the fully equipped Fashion Studios of the School provide students with the opportunity to apply their creativity to real-world scenarios.
Marketing Strategies: Complementing the design modules, the curriculum delves into marketing strategies in the fashion industry where the aim, especially in the context of a campaign, is often to promote a philosophy, an idea, or an aspirational lifestyle, which aims to inspire the consumer and enhance the product.
Here, the concepts of consumer behaviour, branding, retail management, digital marketing and trend analysis are developed for students to understand how to effectively position and promote fashion creations.
Applied Skills Through internships, projects and collaborations with brands and fashion houses, students gain hands-on experience and develop a comprehensive skill set, combining artistic vision with business acumen.
Fashion and Technology The integration of cutting-edge technologies and software used in fashion is an important aspect of the programme. Students are trained in CAD (Computer-Aided Design), Illustrator applications, two-dimensional/three-dimensional (2D/3D) modeling, and other relevant digital tools to enhance their skills in design and marketing.
Critical Thinking and Innovation The programme encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation. Students are called upon to explore sustainability, ethical practices, and cultural influences in fashion, promoting a holistic understanding of the industry.
Portfolio Creation Throughout the programme, students compile a diverse portfolio showcasing their design projects, marketing campaigns, and strategic initiatives. This portfolio serves as a professional tool for entering the job market or continuing studies at the postgraduate level.

Year 1
Discovering my Practice (40 credits)
This unit introduces you to the processes, skills and knowledge required to operate as a creative fashion and textile designer or a specialist in fashion marketing. It includes constructed and printed fabrics, surface designs, pattern cutting, garment construction, laser cutting, and embroidery, as well as the fundamental skills of design and illustration. It is the first diagnostic process of your skills, allowing you to discover your inclination and develop your talent.
Ubiquity and Influence (40 credits)
This unit underscores the reality of contemporary media, that whatever we produce will be shared, consumed, and utilized digitally and in different ways across the globe. Consequently, this unit encourages students to explore fashion as an image through the use and exploration of old and new image creation media, accepting that the final digitization process is inevitable and necessary. Here, you will engage with design, painting, photography, multimedia collage, and motion graphics within and outside the studio, in various urban, rural, historical, cultural, and industrial environments.
Design, Culture and Curiosity (20 credits)
This unit will introduce you to the history of design. It will help you broaden your knowledge about design and provide rich material for you to consider as an emerging professional. We will examine how various historical contexts have influenced design, but equally important, how design itself has shaped culture and society. We will identify specific historical periods with particular influence. We begin with the emergence of modernity (around 1750), as this is where modern fashion, graphic design, and illustration truly take shape within the context of the Industrial Revolution. We conclude with the most recent developments.
Thinking Through Design (20 credits)
Here we continue the development of students into professional designers-researchers through understanding the interaction of design thinking and theory with practice. You will engage with the theory and thinking of design as a creative process for problem finding and solving. We will combine creativity, conceptual, critical, and systemic thinking with approaches designers use to develop methods for analyzing complex problems and situations.
Year 2
Exploring Design (40 credits)
This unit extends your individual practice to industry expectations at a professional designer level and encourages the development of creative skills focusing on projects, independent thinking, and multitasking. As a student, you will use your imagination to create personalized ideas centered on the client, honing your own personal design language.
Interacting with Industry: Formulating Ideas (40 credits)
This unit deals with engaging with theoretical ideas and applying them to analyze visual design for a better understanding of its position in culture and society. Today, as in the past, Design is an important vehicle of "representation." Thinking of design works as "texts" helps us first examine how they produce, reproduce, or challenge ideologies of culture and society, and second, how they can be "read" as visual texts. We will study the ways in which visual and material artifacts represent race, gender, nationality, class, and further categories of identity.
Design: Theory, Making and Meaning (20 credits)
“Design can be art. Design can be aesthetic. The design is so simple, that’s why it is so complicated”-Paul Rand. This unit will encourage you to work with an individual and independent approach to your designs. It includes a focused 24-week programme with studio activities, workshops, and seminars. You will experiment with design methods, work on sketchbooks, printmaking, painting workshops, and digital skills. These will encourage you to experiment and recognize your personal style. You will understand the development of design and how it specifically relates to the fashion and interior design markets.
Entrepreneurial Design Project (20 credits – optional course)
If the idea of «becoming your own boss» in the future is appealing to you, how could you achieve it? If you intend to use your own skills, knowledge, and interests as a basis for creating value, you could:
- Utilize your unique set of characteristics through freelancing.
- Create and operate a social enterprise with philanthropic aims.
- Become self-employed and work for yourself.
- Develop your own business.
- Create a new and innovative product or service with added value that you can sell.
- Develop an innovative business plan.
- Or a combination of the above.
In the end, all these approaches amount to the same thing: developing and offering a product or service for a specific set of interested parties.
My Placement: being a professional (20 credits – optional course)
It provides an opportunity to observe, analyze, and translate theory and relevant methodologies into fashion businesses in practice, over a learning period. During the internship, you will be employed by a company/business in the industry that you will seek out and select. This experience will help you focus and develop your individual ambitions, discover, and test your talents, and ultimately leverage the knowledge you will gain, having gained work experience with the prospects and networking promised by such a start.
Year 3
Negotiating my practice (40 credits)
This is the section you'll anticipate from the beginning of your studies in Fashion Design and Marketing! Here, you'll have the opportunity to design your own collection or work on your own project! You'll experiment, try out, work, all with the support of your experienced teachers, and above all, what we suggest is for you to enjoy it! It will be your time, the creator's time. The focus of this section is to develop your opinion on what fashion and textiles could and should be. You'll work with a theme or themes and/or concepts of your choice, which will maintain your interest throughout the 3rd year.
Communicating My Vision: Concept to Consumer (40 credits)
The main objective of this unit is to present and communicate the fashion concept of the final year within a portfolio of work designed for presentation to the commercial world. This unit encourages students to embrace the positive opportunities presented using social media and relevant platforms within the framework of digital communication strategies. Students are also encouraged to challenge conventional approaches and perspectives in defining, evaluating, presenting, and promoting fashion concepts, products, and language. The aim is to define new, comprehensive, and culturally intelligent perspectives that highlight independent and innovative thinking, while simultaneously demonstrating authenticity and vision.
Critical Voice: Research and Professional Direction (40 credits)
In the "Critical Voice" section, you will be called upon to speculate about your future as a creative professional and critical thinker. This unit will offer a variety of perspectives and challenges to stimulate your thinking and inspire your distinct direction as a creative professional. You will focus your thinking on two practical areas: an independent research project on a topic of your choice, including an interim presentation in a seminar, and a Professional Development and Promotion Plan supported by a portfolio of evidence demonstrating your readiness for your professional direction.
The Independent Research Project is an excellent means to demonstrate your progressive knowledge, intellectual development, and advanced critical analysis of culture and society. It allows you to leverage your passion and emerging areas of specialization in the profession, as it provides an opportunity to explore in-depth a topic of your choice that relates to your own interests.
