Course Information
Strength and Conditioning (S&C) are the principles and applications of Sports Science that evaluate the physical condition of athletes and champions of all sports and aim to optimize their performance. Coaches specialized in Strength & Conditioning design and implement specialized training programmes focused on the requirements of each sport and improving the physical and motor characteristics of athletes, including speed, agility, endurance, strength, power, stability and flexibility, achieving a reduction in the frequency and severity of injuries, improvement of technique and maximization of performance.
The programme
The Strength and Conditioning Master’s has been created by UK-based professionals with extensive experience in the practical applications of S&C, in an area with a long tradition and a high standard in Sport and world-renowned Premier League sports clubs. It has been developed in consultation with “The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity” and aligned to the professional standards developed by CIMSPA, in collaboration with the “UK Strength and Conditioning Association”. It is offered and taught in Greece by academics and professionals of the respective specialties and is the only one of its kind in the country.
What you will study
During the MSc Strength and Conditioning course, you will study the underlying principles of S&C science and the multifaceted role of the S&C practitioner. The applied and practical nature of the course will equip you with the skills required to work with athletes and clients of different ages, abilities and demographics, in designing and implementing bespoke training programmes to enhance athletic performance and health & wellbeing.
You will benefit from the insights of experienced S&C coaches in Greece and abroad and you will have opportunities to gain valuable applied experience and coaching qualifications alongside the course, through internships in top sports facilities and sports clubs. The programme emphasizes a variety of skills, such as learning weightlifting techniques, assessing fitness level through numerous field and lab tests, coaching techniques, scientific design of individualized exercise programmes as well as integrating S&C into the wider interdisciplinary performance-enhancing environment.

A strength and conditioning (S&C) Master’s degree equips students with advanced knowledge and skills in designing, implementing, and evaluating fitness programmes for athletes. This course will give you the opportunity to develop key competencies in strength & conditioning coaching, and challenge you to develop your theoretical knowledge, applied experiences and research skills towards becoming an evidence-based S&C practitioner.
Science and Practice of Training Programme Design
This module will explore the principles of designing, planning and implementing strength and conditioning programmes, examining key principles in relation to optimising sports performance through the application of periodisation and multi-disciplinary approaches to the physical preparation of athletes.
Applied Strength and Conditioning Practice
This module examines real world application of S&C within a variety of contexts. You will gain an insight into the realities of working in the S&C field, with experienced S&C coaches and practitioners from other disciplines sharing their experiences and approaches to working in the industry. Alongside taught content, you will undertake a placement in which you will operate in an applied strength and conditioning capacity.
Athlete Profiling and Performance Monitoring
In this module, you will examine strategies used to assess athletes’ physical capabilities, ranging from movement competency to strength and power diagnostics, field-based testing protocols and biomechanical analysis. You will explore technology and software solutions used in assessing, monitoring and reporting physical performance measures, examine considerations in the reliability, validity and sensitivity of performance tests, and look at how to present information to athletes and coaches in meaningful and impactful ways.
Practical Strength and Conditioning Techniques
This is a practically focused module in which you will be taught training techniques and explore technical models for key resistance training exercises and field-based training methods. You will be given the opportunity to develop your own technical competencies, as well as the opportunity to develop your coaching skills in the weight room and field environments.
Advanced Research Methods
This module provides students with the opportunity to build on their research methods training, applying and reflecting upon the skills required for post graduate level research.
Dissertation
In this module students will be required to undertake an independent research project negotiated with a nominated supervisor. Students will have the experience of utilising in-depth knowledge and understanding of their specialist area whilst engaging in the research process. Students will produce either a piece of empirical research, or professionally related, applied practice depending on the area of study.

Admission Requirements
The programme is addressed to:
- University graduates of Sports Sciences or Coaching disciplines, who wish to specialize in S&C.
- Professional trainers, personal trainers who wish to diversify and develop their skills.
- S&C coaches who wish to improve their qualifications and specialist skills.
- Professionals from other sectors, who wish to add expertise to a complementary discipline (e.g. physiotherapists). The programme is of particular value to physiotherapists, because it provides training related to both injury prevention and athletes’ rehabilitation.
- University graduates from other fields, who wish to pursue an alternative career to the field they chose in their undergraduate degree, following their passion for sports.
Candidates without a first or relevant university degree may be admitted if they can demonstrate significant professional experience as coaches, personal trainers or military training officers.
The minimum English language requirement is equivalent to IELTS 6.5 (C1). If you do not possess an official English language certificate, you can sit the College’s internal placement test.
Moreover, you’ll be asked to submit a resume, as well as a recommendation letter from employers and tutors, and you’ll be called for an academic interview with the programme leader.
Academic Team
Dr. Panagiotis Vitalis Panagiotis was born in Athens in 1987 and is currently married and the father of one child. He holds a PhD in Clinical Ergophysiology from the University of Wolverhampton in the United Kingdom (UK), where he was a visiting lecturer. In Greece he is a visiting professor at the University of Thessaly in the postgraduate programme ''Clinical Ergophysiologist'' and a programme leader and lecturer at Mediterranean College. His research concerns the laboratory evaluation, application and study of the effect of exercise and physical activity on cardiac and pulmonary physiology in patients with autoimmune rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases and in the general population. Specifically, his area of expertise evolves around how physical activity and exercise can improve both the cardiopulmonary and musculoskeletal systems through specific physiological mechanisms. As a researcher, he participated in international research projects with interdisciplinary teams composed of leading academics in their field. Some of these projects were funded by the European Union (EU) and the Pan-European Organization of Rheumatology (EULAR), the world's leading rheumatology organisation. EULAR presented results of his work, where he is now a member of the IMPACT-RMD research group and a member of the research group "Physical Activity, Exercise & Rehabilitation" of the field of Health Professionals (HPRs). Dr Panagiotis Vitalis is also a reviewer in international scientific journals and has a comprehensive cutting-edge work experience in Physical Activity, Exercise and Health, having worked in world-class centres in the UK and Greece and in Belarus. |
Polyxeni Spiliopoulou, PhD c.
Polyxeni, PhD candidate at the School of Physical Education and Sport Science of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, is a Sports Scientist in the fields of "athletic performance" and "exercise and health" with 16 publications and 81 citations in international journals. She has participated in more than 20 publications in international scientific conferences in Greece and abroad with awards in some of them. She has taught at the School of Physical Education and Sport Science at undergraduate and postgraduate level, while at the same time, from 2018 until today, she works as a teacher in private schools. |
